BLACK DOG BLUES

ACT 1 - FUN CITY

Written and illustrated variably between 2020 and 2023, Fun City is the first act of a 10-act werewolf body horror romance titled Black Dog Blues. The first act introduces characters and sets up the beginnings of a plot, primarily allowing us to meet Jake “Red” Machowski, a young and naive Polish-Canadian student studying folkloristics at Columbia in New York in the Fall of 1980. After discovering a tragedy has occurred to a fellow student, Red goes to a bodega on his way home, and is saved from a mugging by a mysterious middle-aged man with one too many piercings for a respectable New Yorker in 1980. It will certainly all go downhill from there.

Diana Martin, a Junior Medical Examiner, and Dr. Warren Graham, Red’s quirky British supervisor, are also introduced as secondary characters, who will eventually go on to join unlikely forces in solving the aforementioned tragedy.

The script was edited by Adamo Soriano in 2022. Black Dog Blues is dormant as a project and was worked on as an experiment in style. Clearly, Annie didn’t stick with the greyscale practice. There are untouched preliminaries for Act II. The comic is unavailable as Annie has a desire to rework it eventually, but if you ask really nicely they may resentfully and regrettably email it to you. It was originally available on itch.io.

It’s not as bad as they say it is. It just doesn’t serve their practice any longer. Some of the better pages are in preview below.

CW: gore and violence, nudity, vicious “dog,” medical/autopsy portrayals, mild explicit language, blood, guns, knives.
